Rain Test as per IEC 60529 or MIL-STD-810H

Outdoor equipment meets rain eventually. Sometimes it's a light drizzle, sometimes it's a proper downpour, and the enclosure either holds up or it doesn't. A rain test is how that gets confirmed before the product ever leaves the factory, rather than being discovered on-site.

Depending on the industry and end use, this test runs under IEC 60529 or MIL-STD-810H. Both check whether a product resists water penetration when exposed to rain, moisture, or direct spray, though they simulate it slightly differently.

Water gets sprayed onto the equipment at controlled angles, pressure, and duration to mimic real rainfall. Afterward, the unit gets opened up and checked for internal moisture, then powered on to confirm it still functions correctly.

What often gets missed on paper is that a product can look fully sealed and still leak through a small gap around a connector or seam. Water ingress testing finds that gap in a lab, where fixing it costs a fraction of what it would after field deployment.

Aldo Compliance's process:

01

Choosing between IEC 60529 and MIL-STD-810H methods based on the product's actual application

02

Controlling spray angle, pressure, and duration to match the chosen standard precisely

03

Opening the unit post-test to inspect for internal moisture or damage

04

Powering the product on afterward to confirm normal functional performance

FAQs

What's the difference between the two rain test standards?

IEC 60529 gives an ingress protection rating; MIL-STD-810H simulates specific military field rain conditions in more detail.

Can this be combined with IP rating testing?

Yes, since both tests use similar water exposure methods, they're often run together.
